All About Spray Foam Sealants

As standards of energy efficiency and for designing higher quality buildings increase, “canned” insulating spray foam sealants have grown in popularity over the past 25 years among professional contractors and DIYers.

Often used by professional insulation contractors, window installers, plumbers, electricians, HVAC, and DIY/homeowners, insulating foam sealants are one of the most economical and versatile sealants available. This is due to foam sealants’ high expansion properties, yield coverage, and effectiveness as a barrier to dust, sound, air, moisture, bugs, and rodents.

What is “canned” polyurethane insulating foam?

Polyurethane foam was initially developed in the 1940s for military and aviation applications. It was not until the late 1970s that new technology allowed spray foam insulation to be used widely in home construction and improvement projects.

Polyurethane spray foam chemistry primarily consists of 2 main ingredients, isocyanate and polyol resin. When mixed, sprayed, and fully cured, the foam expands roughly 30 to 60 times its liquid volume.

As the technology for equipment, manufacturing, and packaging for polyurethane foam chemistry improved, one-component canned spray foam became more portable and efficient. The ability to dispense the foam material using an aerosol-blowing agent with a straw or gun dispensing tool allowed installers to apply the foam in small “bead-type” applications.

As a result, one-component canned insulating spray foam (OCF – one-component foam) has been a game changer for professional contractors, manufacturers, industrial installers, and DIYers in pursuit of higher quality buildings and meeting the rigorous energy conservation requirements we have today.

OCF applications – Where can I apply OCF sealants

OCF sealants fill joints, seams, gaps, and cracks in wall cavities wherever air leakage can occur. Due to their expansion properties and dispensing methods, OCF sealants are highly effective for use in hard-to-reach areas and offer usage for far more applications than just insulation purposes.

Due to the varying formulations available on the market and the usefulness of OCF chemistries, some spray foam sealants are also used for exterior applications and as a sealant or adhesive for landscape projects, including stone wall repair, pond/waterfall fillers, and to secure landscape blocks. Foam sealants are also widely used in the recreational vehicle and transportation industry.

Types of Foam Sealants – Understanding the performance properties of Closed-Cell vs. Open-Cell Foam

Since the inception of spray foam insulation products, manufacturers have developed a variety of application-based formulations to serve their intended purpose. These foam formulations range in closed-cell vs. open-cell foam content ratios and vary in cured characteristics and performance properties. Although each has different cured properties, they differ in features and benefits. It comes down to selecting the right product for the application and choosing the type of foam sealant that best fits your needs.

Spray foam insulation is referred to as open-cell or closed-cell because of the difference between the makeup of the cell structure – those tiny air bubbles – within the cured foam. Open-cell foam is full of cells that are not completely encapsulated, making the foam softer and more flexible with a lower core density. As a result, open-cell foam has a greater expansion rate than closed-cell foam, which leads to greater yield and lower costs. However, due to its structure, a greater thickness is often needed to perform as an effective air barrier compared to closed-cell foam. The lighter-density open-cell foam will perform well in dampening sound, but is not the optimal choice as a barrier to water and moisture.

On the other hand, closed-cell foam consists of densely packed cells fully encapsulated within the foam material; it has a higher density and is more rigid and stable than open-cell foam. Because the cells are entirely closed and pressed together, it has a higher R-value and performs better as an air and moisture barrier. Due to the heavier density of the closed-cell foam, the material absorbs sound, though not as effectively as the lighter-density open-cell foam. This results in a lower yield which comes at a higher price.

Selecting the correct product for the intended application

OCF manufacturers typically market open or closed-cell foam formulations to match specific application scenarios. OCF sealants come in various types and sizes, which are packaged with different dispensing methods to meet the installer’s needs and the intended purpose.

General-purpose foam sealants

General-purpose OCF sealants often market towards filling, sealing, and insulating interior seams, gaps, cracks, and other similar openings. It also provides a simple, cost-effective solution to help minimize unwanted airflow and improve energy efficiency. General-purpose foam sealants are typically not advised for window and door installation. They could warp or distort window and door frames due to their pressure build or high expansion rate.

Fireblocking Foam Sealants

In non-fire-rated Type V residential construction, openings around vents, pipes, ducts, cables, and wires at ceiling and floor level are to be filled or “fireblocked” with an approved material to resist the free passage of flame and products of combustion. Although traditional fireblocking materials such as lumber, wood, particleboard, gypsum, cement-based millboard, or batts/blankets of mineral wool or fiberglass insulation, and noncombustible ASTM- E136 rated caulking compounds are considered, the International Residential Code (IRC) Section R302.11 Item 4 allows for the interpretation of using fireblocking foam sealants in some building department jurisdictions.
Over the past 15+ years, manufacturers of foam sealants have introduced orange or pink-colored foam sealants marketed toward fireblocking applications, to fill the open voids around wires, pipes, ducts, and other mechanical penetrating items in single-family new home construction.
Initially, noncombustible ASTM-E136-tested caulking materials were the only acceptable material for this application; however, OCF manufacturers have gained approval in some building municipality jurisdictions by running a modified ASTM-E814 test to be recognized by the ICC International Code Council) Evaluation Services as an alternative Fireblocking material.
Although the foam products are “marketed” for fireblocking applications, they are flammable, not fireproof, and used more as an air sealant to minimize the drafts that carry flame throughout the building. It is best to check with your local municipality for the Fireblocking requirements in your area to ensure the acceptability of the foam as an approved Fireblocking material by the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).

Multi-purpose black foam sealants

Although many OCF sealant manufacturers label their foam products for interior and exterior uses, most OCF sealants are not UV stable. The yellow, tan, or orange-colored cured foams are most often susceptible to discoloration and degradation when exposed to ultraviolet light.
Multipurpose Black Insulating Foam Sealant is an excellent solution for discreetly filling unwanted gaps across various applications where product appearance could be a factor. Examples include landscaping, pond design, waterfall design, small openings in home exteriors as a pest or rodent deterrent, as well as vehicle undercarriages and marine applications.

Extreme temperature and high humidity foam sealants

Polyurethane foam sealants are moisture-cure, where freshly dispensed foam absorbs moisture from the humidity in the air to adhere, expand, and cure properly. Having adequate temperatures, ventilation, and suitable humidity is ideal for achieving excellent adhesion, expansion, and product performance. Although the vast majority of polyurethane-based sealants are installed at warmer temperatures, around 65°F- 80 °F (18°C-27°C), geographical location and seasonality can have a negative effect on the installation process and curing characteristics of OCF sealants.
As a result, some OFC manufacturers offer extreme temperature or high humidity formulations to ensure the product and installer always experience optimal performance year-round. But suppose you don’t have access to extreme-temperature foam sealants. In that case, it is considered best practice to keep your foam sealant canisters and dispensing tools stored at room temperature, warm them up before use, and slightly wet or mist the substrate with water during application.

Insect / Pest deterrent foam sealants

Sealing holes, gaps, and cracks with OCF sealants can prevent small insects, rodents, and other pests from infiltrating living areas. However, most polyurethane foam sealants do not contain chemical insect or rodent deterrents. Some OCF manufacturers have offered formulations specially made with EPA-registered pesticides that repel mice, birds, bats, squirrels, and other pests from entering the home.

Foam construction adhesives

OCF construction adhesives are foam-based adhesives that, once dispended, immediately collapse into a gel and slowly re-expand to fill inconsistencies in the substrates – creating a solid, long-term bond between building materials. Most commonly applied as a subfloor, drywall, or foamboard adhesive, OCF adhesives are tested to ASTM C557, ASTM D3498, and APA-AFG-01. They boast far greater yield and significantly reduce labor savings compared to traditional caulk-based construction adhesives.

After shaking the can, the applicator inverts the “gun foam” OCF canister and screws it onto a foam gun dispensing tool. This tool has a flow-control dial that allows users to adjust the bead size to match their desired output and control the dispensed foam more comfortably. The longer foam gun barrel enables the installer to apply the foam in harder-to-access spots more efficiently and effectively.

Foam guns can range from close to “disposable” in quality at a very economical price to higher priced, professional models made of high-quality components designed for precision, durability, and longevity. Foam gun dispensing tools come in a variety of options with different handles, valves, flow-control dials, and barrel lengths. Of course, you get what you pay for, and the installer should properly clean and maintain their foam guns like any other tool they depend on to perform top-quality craftsmanship.

Cured foam tends to build up on the tip and clog the nozzle, and lack of care and cleaning could result in shorter gun life. BEST PRACTICES:
Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the label of the product
Follow all safety instructions and wear the proper PPE – Protect eyes and avoid getting uncured foam on your skin or in your hair
Always store cans upright and in a cool, dry area (do not lay cans on their side)
Before foaming, be sure to warm the can to room temperature

For optimal yield, shake the can very well (at least 30 to 60 seconds)

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OPEN-CELL AND CLOSED-CELL INSULATING SPRAY FOAM?

Open-Cell Foam
Open-Cell foam cures soft and flexible and is an excellent air and sound insulator. Open-cell foam has a low density, with each cell in the foam being broken or not completely encapsulated, allowing air to fill all of the spaces in the material. Open-cell foam has a greater expansion rate than closed-cell foam, which could lead to greater yield and lower cost; however, a greater thickness may need to be applied to perform as an effective air barrier. Open-cell foam does not perform well as a barrier to moisture and water.
Properties of Open-Cell Foam:
Higher expansion rate – greater yield – more economical
R-Value approximately 3.5 per inch
Higher moisture permeability (lower moisture barrier)
Less effectiveness as an air barrier (Greater thickness needs to be applied)

Closed-Cell Foam
Closed-Cell foam consists of densely packed cells fully encapsulated within the foam material, making it harder and more rigid than open-cell foam. Closed-cell foam has a higher R-Value and performs better as an air and moisture barrier. It is not as effective as a sound barrier, and the lower yield comes at a higher price.
Properties of Closed-Cell Foam:
Lower expansion rate – less yield – less economical
R-Value approximately 7.0 per inch
Lower moisture permeability (higher moisture barrier)

R-value measures the capacity of an insulating material to resist heat flow. Also referred to as “thermal resistance,” the R-value of different insulating materials is based on ASTM test method and is determined by material type, thickness, and installed weight per square foot, and not by thickness alone.

HOW TO STORE OCF CANS?

Store OCF Sealants in dry area between 60° – 90° F (16° – 32°C.)
Once the can is on the gun, always leave the can on the gun to ensure no moisture from entering the system to clog up the gun
Always store can upright
Storage above 120° F (49°C) can cause leakage due to pressure
Do not store near sources of heat or ignition
Storage below 60° F (16° C) can cause crystallization of liquid components and affect the quality

WHAT IF A CAN OF FOAM IS ONLY PARTIALLY USED? CAN IT BE USED AT A LATER TIME?

Storage above 90°F (32°C) will reduce product quality and life. Do not store at temperatures above 120°F (49°C). Do not freeze

HOW TO REMOVE WET FOAM?

Wear chemical-resistant gloves and protective clothing to avoid skin contact. If foam does come in contact with skin, wipe off as much of the liquid as possible and wash well with soap and water. Call Before You Install

When it comes to choosing the correct firestopping product, to resume the integrity of a fire-rated assembly, remember to call before you install.

With years of experience in the sealant, adhesive, and firestopping industries under our belt, we have observed our fair share of costly errors made with firestopping products. Particularly with misapplication and improper product selection.
Some easily preventable mistakes we commonly see are:
Improper installation of our Fire Caulk-136 (FC-136) and our FlameTech FB Fireblocking foam (DP44242). The ASTM-E136 spec and fireblocking foam are for non-rated single-family penetrations.
Incorrect installation of bond breaker tape; bond breaker tape should be installed behind our Firestop-814+ when indicated, as it serves to buffer the joint and prevent three-point adhesion.
Using backer rod in place of mineral wood or not using backing tape material at all.
No one wants to have a job delayed due to a firestopping error, especially with the added stress and costs that come with it. As a rule of thumb, “if you have any questions at all, call before you install.”.
Preplanning your work with firestopping procedures in mind can help make the installation process easier and more efficient. Preplanning enables you to identify and address any concerns or issues that may arise earlier on. It also allows you to reach out to the product manufacturer, the AHJ (authority having jurisdiction), and other relevant parties for any additional information or clarity you may need.
When installing, make sure you follow the UL systems diagram, the product’s technical datasheet, and the directions on the product’s packaging. Neglecting to do so can result in a failed inspection or, even worse, a complete firestop system failure.

To say the world of fireblocking and firestopping is complex would be an understatement. Firestopping and fireblocking each have different requirements, different building codes, and differing installation requirements. The difficulties that these differences present are only compounded by the huge array of products available for use. Each year, we receive hundreds of phone calls and emails from contractors, inspectors, and architects who are genuinely wanting to build better, requesting guidance on correct product usage and applicable codes.
Of course, here at Everkem Diversified Products, we’re happy to oblige. While there are many notable differences between the two, they share a common, vital purpose. The purpose of fireblocking and firestopping is to protect property and life and that’s something we’re passionately committed to. As a manufacturer of fireblocking and firestopping products, it’s our responsibility to take an active role in ensuring that purpose is fulfilled. That role can take the form of providing product training, answering code questions, or providing engineering judgments. Oftentimes, it comes in the form of product recommendations, making sure the right product is used correctly in the proper applications – even if the right product isn’t ours. For the Everkem team, it always includes educating when, where, and however we can.

So you can imagine our pleasure at making the acquaintance of Sharron Halpert, owner of Halpert Life Safety Consulting, LLC. Her firm specializes in offering training, consulting, and inspection services to contractors, architects, local governments… practically anyone who has any involvement with creating, following, or enforcing building codes.
With over 20 years of experience in the firestopping industry that includes having overseen more than $18 billion in projects
covering 25+ million square feet, she knows her stuff. That knowledge is complemented by a genuine, infectious concern for the safety of all those served by proper adherence to the building codes. She originally contacted us as part of an information-gathering mission for an upcoming unit in an online training series she was putting together called “Firestop Coffee Break Training”. This series’ goal was to break complex firestopping concepts down into short, easy-to-understand chunks that didn’t feel like coursework and could fit into your life as easily and naturally as a coffee break.
This specific unit, we learned, was prompted by a devastating fire in an ongoing apartment project. While the building was unoccupied and thankfully there was no loss of life, the fire caused roughly $16 million in damage. The frightening part is that it could have been much worse.
It’s important to note that this project required a third-party special inspector who was responsible for reviewing the firestop installations. The fire happened in phase two of the project. Phase one was already occupied and was constructed with the same defects that likely allowed the fire to propagate. the frustrating part is that the damage that was sustained could have been minimized if the construction had been better, and the construction could have been better if only things weren’t so confusing.
And that, Sharron explained, was the goal of the training course – to provide some much-needed clarity; that by the end of the training one would understand the differences between fireblocking and firestopping, as well as be able to interpret the vague, dreaded fireblocking phrase found in building codes: “or other approved material“. Specifically, how to decide if something should (or shouldn’t) be approved by looking at existing code language, testing and certifications, product installation instructions, and other documentation.
While Sharron has over 20 years of firestopping experience, the realm of fireblocking was, in her words, “a different creature”. As a company that got its start in the fireblocking industry, and offers product solutions for both fireblocking and firestopping we can confirm that it is truly different.
After hearing the goal and scope of the training program, we couldn’t help but want to be involved and help out in any way we could. We were more than happy to lend a hand in the project by relaying the evolution of the fireblocking building codes, what tests applied to fireblocking and how they’re performed, as well as our own experiences.
The course, “Fireblocking – What is Code Compliant?” is an International Code Council approved course that can be used to meet Continuing Education Requirements. It consists of 25 lessons broken down into a series of short ‘coffee break’ videos that range from 5 to 20 minutes long, set against the backdrop of the real-world fire which was the impetus for the training.
Calling on her past experience as a kindergarten teacher, Sharron makes a point to breathe life into the building codes and turns the fire test standards into stories. She connects the dots so that you don’t have just random facts floating around in your head, but actual connection of concepts which directly translate to what you’re likely to encounter in the field.
The “Fireblocking-What is Code Compliant?” course is broken down into 25 lessons, ranging from 5 to 20 minutes, that are perfect for viewing on your daily coffee break.
The course dives into the fire test standards relating to both fireblocking and firestopping – outlining their similarities and differences, detailing how these tests are modified as well as what those modifications mean. It also covers the code language in the IBC and IRC relating to firestopping and fireblocking. It even takes a thorough look at the submittal documents of multiple products, examining what specifiers, installers, and inspectors should be looking at when deciding whether to approve a material for fireblocking purposes. All of this is summed up by a few additional messages from fire investigators which help drive home the lessons before you have to deal with a fire on one of your projects.

Firestop-814+ and Sound Seal 90 Meet LEED v4 Emission Requirements

To that end, we are pleased to announce that our Firestop-814+ Firestopping Sealant and Sound Seal 90 Draft, Smoke, and Acoustical Sound Sealant have been UL tested for emissivity and are LEED v4 compliant sealants as ‘low emission interior sealants and adhesives applied on site’ per testing to CA Section 01350.

WHAT IS LEED V4?
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program was created by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) and the Department of Energy (DOE) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1997 and was later formalized by the USGBC.
LEED was established as a rating system to evaluate the environmental performance of a building as well as helping to promote a market shift towards a more sustainable design. Today, LEED is the most widely used green building system in the world and covers nearly all building project types. The credit-based system creates a framework wherein project teams create healthy, efficient, and cost-effective buildings by earning points for satisfying specific ‘green’ building criteria during the construction and designed use of a building.
The LEED rating system has seen multiple revisions, with the most recent iteration being LEED v4. While being launched in 2013, projects were able to be registered under the previous version’s (LEED 2009) rating system until last year. This latest version, according to USGBC, aims to be “more specialized and designed for a better user experience”. Additionally, LEED v4 contains more stringent criteria while requiring product validation by approved third-party testing.

LEED V4.1
LEED V4.1 is an update rather than a full version change. It references the newest standards and is more performance-based. On U.S. Green Building’s website, LEED V4.1 “raises the bar on building standards to address energy efficiency , water conservation, site selection, material selection, day lighting, and waste reduction.” The rating system in LEED V4.1 has been simplified; the scoreboard and requirements are streamlined, and new methodologies for tracking and rating performance are integrated directly into the rating system. This provides a clear framework for achieving LEED certification, not just for entire buildings but the spaces with in them as well.

WHAT’S CHANGED IN LEED V4.1
If you already know version v4, you won’t have to re-learn a new rating system with v4.1. However, there are some new additions, such as the new metric to evaluate energy performance. For the first time, energy-based evaluations will be on greenhouse gas emissions plus energy costs. To recognize projects that go above and beyond, they’ve introduced an option for exemplary performance within the BD+C credit.
For low-emitting materials in LEED v4.1, there are some changes. For example, instead of requiring you to earn every category for all products in order to get three points, you can now choose any of the categories and get 1 point for meeting 2 categories, 2 points for meeting 3, and 3 points for meeting 4, as well as an exemplary performance point for earning 5 categories – out of a total of 8.
The emissions standards have also changed. Instead of 90% emissions compliance, it is now 75% and applies to all categories, excepts flooring and ceilings, which are both 90% instead of 100%. LEED V4 AND VOC EMISSIONS
In regards to certain VOC emitting materials, previous LEED versions have treated them as 5 separate issues, each worth 1 point. In LEED v4, these categories (plus an additional one) have been condensed into one credit called “Low Emitting Materials”, worth a total of up to 3 points. Also in previous versions, LEED set out VOC guidelines (using those set by California regulations or GreenSeal standards) and the grams per liter of VOCs in each product used on a LEED certified project were compared to these limits to determine compliance.
In LEED v4, the VOC compliance guideline still remains, but an additional layer of certification is required. VOC compliance alone is no longer enough. Instead, LEED v4 has bolstered the requirements by mandating emissions testing by a certified, third-party laboratory to ensure the product is in compliance with the California Department of Public Health’s “Standard Method for the Testing and Evaluation of Volatile Organic Chemical Emissions from Indoor Sources using Environmental Chambers” v1.2 (Emission testing method for CA Specification 01350).

Not too long ago, the words Firestopping and Fireblocking were used interchangeably, even though they apply to very different construction objectives. Even today, many manufacturers, distributors, contractors, and installers aren’t entirely sure what these terms mean.
However, understanding the difference between Fireblocking and Firestopping is essential, as many failed firestop inspections result from using the wrong product in the wrong type of application/construction assembly. Using an incorrect product for a particular application could have potentially dire consequences such as fines, property damage, and worst of all – loss of life.

FIRESTOP COLLARS 101

What you need to know about intumescent firestop collars and wrap strips.

In the firestop industry, we have a saying that if a wrap strip or firestop collar can’t do it, nothing can. Although our Firestop-814+ Intumescent Sealant is UL tested for a variety of firestopping applications for up to 3 hours, when it comes to “hard pass” firestopping scenarios, wrap strips, and firestop collars are the last line of defense. They possess the most significant expansion and fire resistance in our line of firestopping products.
INTUMESCENT WRAP STRIPS
Wrap Strips are flexible strips of highly intumescent firestop material used primarily for plastic and insulated pipe applications. When exposed to heat, wrap strips drastically expand to seal the penetration as the combustible plastic pipe or pipe insulation melt away. As the strip expands, it hardens to form a protective char that acts as a barrier to prevent the passage of flame, smoke, and gasses from one building compartment to another.
Our wrap strips come on a 1″ wide x ¼” thick x 144″ roll and a 2″ wide x ¼” thick x 144″ roll. They are easy to install by wrapping the required number of strips around the penetrating item and pushing them into the annular space.
INTUMESCENT FIRESTOP COLLARS
Intumescent firestop collars (also known as pipe collars) are used for areas with insufficient annular space to fit a wrap strip. Firestop collars are prefabricated metal devices that house a precut section of wrap strip, allowing the installer to wrap the collar around the pipe and fasten it to the substrate. The easy-lock mechanism of our firestop collars ensures a simple, quick, and secure installation.
Both wrap strips and firestop collars are typically used for penetrations using PVC, CPVC, ABS, PVC foam core, ABS foam core, FRPP, PEX pipe, and electrical cables. Both are UL Classified for open and closed pipe systems and are used most often for pipes 3 inches or greater in diameter.
Though our Firestop-814+ Intumescent Firestop Sealant has UL testing for pipes up to 2 inches in diameter without the use of a collar, many inspectors require a firestop collar on 1.5-inch and 2-inch pipes. As with extensions of our published firestop data, we recommend checking with the AHJ before installation.
